"He's first. You're next."

That's the message someone scribbled on a photo of Stacy May Charms' six-year-old son, two days before her release from prison.

Stacy knows why. She doesn't know who.

And she's not waiting around to find out. Her plan is to grab her child and run.

Elizabeth McClaine has no idea why Stacy ran, but she intends to find out. Contracted to oversee the governor’s early release program for young incarcerated mothers, she is responsible for the program’s first successful applicant. But when Stacy May breaks parole only two hours after her release, Elizabeth is flung into social and political exile, her reputation in ruins.

If she is to clear her name and save Stacy May, she must figure out what Stacy knows, and who she’s running from.

And all the clues point back to those who were supposed to be saving her.

The Elizabeth McClaine thrillers are additions to the great action and character-driven mystery and suspense thrillers in the tradition of J.D. Robb, S. W. Hubbard, and Mary Higgins Clark.

A Word from the Author

First of all, thank you for your interest in my books. You’ll find in many of my books, I include characters with intellectual or physical challenges. Added to this, I wanted to write twisty crime thrillers with complex characters and surprise endings, so I created the Elizabeth McClaine thriller series.

So, who is Elizabeth McClaine?

Elizabeth is a little different from the usual private detective or amateur sleuth. She’s a feisty, mature socialite with reputation and social standing, and a simmering attraction for Detective Lance Delaney, a man with his own secrets.
The storylines involve kidnappings, heists, white-collar crime, and murders that will keep the pages turning onto the wee hours.

What gives these stories heart?

Real, believable characters from Elizabeth herself to Holly, the cherished only daughter born with Down syndrome. Having loved and cared for a disabled daughter myself, I know the joy and the challenges caring for and loving a disabled child can bring. Therefore, from book #1, Holly brings Elizabeth a real sense of purpose and a desire to help those in need.
The books in the series are sequential, but each is a standalone, so you can read them out of order.

The Elizabeth McClaine Series so far Includes

BOOK #1 THE CANDIDATE’S DAUGHTER
BOOK #2 CHILD OF THE STATE
BOOK #3 A STOLEN WOMAN
THE ELIZABETH MCCLAINE BOX SET OF THRILLERS

Standalone Titles by Catherine Lea

LAST SEEN LEAVING – A THRILLER
DROPPING DEAD IN DELBY RISH – A VERY BRITISH MURDER MYSTERY (Satire)
THE CONTESTANT – A SERIAL KILLER THRILLER

If you have any questions, you’ll find my page on Goodreads.
Again, my most heartfelt thanks for your interest,
Catherine

Book was really well written, good editing. Story line was interesting. Biggest issue I had was with the two main characters. They each had a moment where, I'm like, wait, why would they do that? Like the girl in the horror movie who runs up the stairs instead of out the front door. As one main example, the whole point of the book was for the girl to get to her son. She gets to him, and then let's him go. I almost stopped reading at that point because it left me so confused as to her actions. I kept reading, hoping to gain some sense from it, but I didn't. For me, the bad person was an obvious bad person from the beginning. The other people involved were also very obvious and I felt should be obvious to the characters, but it wasn't. Also, there were soooo many names to keep track of. I often found myself looking back to remember who somebody was, and I read the book on consecutive days. I'm still left wondering who one of the bad people actually were.

Child of the State An Elizabeth McClaine Thriller Book 2 edition by Catherine Lea Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Wow! This mystery starts with a bang and never quits. I loved seeing a strong, smart and courageous woman as the main character. Or should I say, characters? Both of these women share a bond that impels them to push through dangerous situations; namely, the love of a mother for her child. The fact that there are special needs people in this story really brings heart and realism to the book. I recommend this as a Must Read!
The storyline was interesting and a little different. Maybe a bit farfetched if you let yourself think a little. But it moved along well and was good escapist reading. My main complaint was how the author wouldn't quit writing about the characters' eyes, gazing here and there while in thought, and those steely blue eyes ad infinitum. Even a cursory edit could have corrected so many things to tighten up the writing.
I thoroughly enjoy this novel. It was hard to put down. Just a glimpse of the penal system that was privately owned that needs donations of money to pay the bills. A under staffed women's correctional facility that started a sewing program that not only trained inmates paying them .25 cents an hour. This is where the corruption starts and our story begins. A young mother in early release trying to save her son so she removes her monitor and skips our on her probation officer and sets out to save her son before she is captured again.. Corruption involves the rich and the political system . Good novel
The storyline was very different from the usual & that's good. The whole situation Stacy got herself into could have easily been avoided. Aside from that, it was really annoying that the author kept saying "eyes rested at a point just above her head", "mouth twisted up to one side" & "ran her teeth along her lower lip". These phrases are repeated in almost every paragraph in the book!
This book was actually pretty good once I was able to get past the first part. I was having a hard time believing that a seventeen year old would be sentenced to five years in prison for pushing a social worker down who was trying to take her infant son away from her. I can see how any mother overcome with fear and grief would do exactly that. I can also see that she might get a punishment- even probation but not five years in prison. Other than that once the book was rolling, I read it straight through and I did enjoy it, I have already purchased another of this author’s bookd and look forward to reading it.
I loved the first book in this series and was excited to see this book, the second. Child of the State did not disappoint. Engaging characters and tightly knit storyline worked together to make this book an excellent one. Highly recommend. Anxiously awaiting book three!
Stacy May Charms was only seventeen when she assaulted a social worker who was trying to take her small son. Now she’s in prison and her son is in foster care. But a state program piloted by socialite Elizabeth McClaine has given her a second chance. Elizabeth believes in Stacy and has put her career on the line by selecting her as the programs first candidate. The only problem is that Stacy saw something while in prison and she has reason to believe that her life and the life of her son are in danger. So, as soon as she hits the streets, she runs. Now the police and the bad guys are after her, and Elizabeth McClaine is left to figure out why Stacy ran, and if she needs help. Child of the State is a fast-paced thriller with a lot of heart. In it, author Catherine Lea tells a story of trust, and fear, and a mother’s devotion that is authentic, and moving, and has kept me turning the page.
