For the honor. For the glory. For... Dumphrey's??

Tora Jane Golden had high hopes of competing in The Cunning Cantrip Competition as a Grand Old House of Magic student. But alas, she gets placed in Dumphrey’s, school for the magically inept. It’s mortifying, having to wear the Dumphrey’s egg yolk yellow t-shirt around town, while all her friends wear prestigious school t-shirts. It’s no fun to be labeled a “dump” girl, a loser, but TJ’s not one for wallowing.

She’s a take action kinda gal—a feisty fireball of energy. Literally. She can shoot lightning bolts out of her foot, a feat that would be awe-amazing if only she knew how to control it.

In danger of setting herself and everything around her on fire, TJ must learn to temper her bursts of anger and reign in her fiery attitude if she hopes to win the Cunning Cantrip title.

TJ & The Cunning Cantrip Competition is a story with feverish flavor, a playful look at what it takes to balance an ambitious nature with the heart and humility of a true champion.

TJ THE CUNNING CANTRIP COMPETITION Stormshifters Book 1 edition by Kim Park Children eBooks

Ms. Park, you have outdone yourself with this adorable, hilarious, and absolutely inspiring novel. After I began reading, I just couldn't put it down!

I'd like to start off by saying I absolutely love the fact that TJ's greatest talent was shooting lightning out of her feet. It was a totally awesome idea that added quite a bit of humor to the storyline. I can proudly say that if I had that particular ability, I would have burned, my house, the rink, and most likely the whole of Florida to the ground by now. Good thing TJ had Jeffery (with a hose close at hand) to look after her.

The plot of this story definitely had a Harry Potter based theme to it (just as you promised) with a humorous and personal touch that caused a lot of delighted giggling on my part. When I began reading, I really wasn't sure what to expect but the story definitely ensnared me within its twists and turns just as the forbidden tunnels did the competitors.

The Cunning Cantrip Competition had some great surprises and a lot exciting suspense moments. TJ's will to win as well as her sometimes slightly sly and other times kind of klutzy way of using magic brought a whole lot of reality to the fantasy. The little romances that went on throughout the story were adorable and the characters were so sweet! I often found myself rooting for them.

I hope you're planning to write a sequel and continue TJ's story and Dumphery's! ;)

TJ THE CUNNING CANTRIP COMPETITION Stormshifters Book 1 edition by Kim Park Children eBooks Reviews

This is a book that preteens would love. Filled with magic, danger, and the angst of growing up, it chronicles T.J.'s chagrin at being in the "slow group" at magical summer camp to her triumph of being school champion and heroine. I would read it to my classes (3rd to 6th grade) because it is entertaining while teaching that being labeled inept and different shouldn't defeat anyone.
This was such a great read and very much appreciated. I dont usually read fantasy books and i was pleasantly surprised. From start to finish i was drawn in and could completely relate to the lovable TJ. Weve all had times when people fail to believe in us and overlook our abilities. TJ proved that even if no one believes in you, as long as you believe in yourself you can conquer anything (even meddling evil sorcerers)! This was a charming, magical tale that i would suggest to any reader. )
What an incredible book! It definitely would appeal to readers of all ages. It reminded me somewhat of recent popular fantasy books. However, it seemed much more light-hearted, cleverly written, and quite entertaining. I found it difficult to put down as I followed TJ during her training and participation in the Cantrip Competition. This book sends a great message to all about what makes a true champion. I highly recommend this book to others. I definitely look forward to reading additional books by Kim Parks.
What a fun book to read! One of those that you do not want to put down.
Yes it does remind me of the fiction of Harry Potter and it does answer beautifully to a thrilling story with very good ideas to this world of Magic. Very nicely written, I am impressed how every events unfolds itself in a smooth and light reading.
I love it! My son could not stop reading over my shoulder and his comment was "humm, this is a good book, mom! What is this?
I would like to read it when you are done, mom".
This is a book of a new serie for every boy and girl and adult who like a good fiction book with nice Magic adventure.I hope you do write more to continue the adventure of this sweet, determined young girl!
This is such a cute and fun story! I love the characters, especially Tora Jane (aka TJ). I think she's such a great character. I love her optimism and her determination. I love that she has a good work ethic and works to overcome her faults. I also really like Lianne and Jeffrey. I like how all the characters work together and help each other, and I like that they learn that when they work together they do so much better than they do on their own. There's just enough scary stuff and adventure in this book that I think boys will enjoy it as well as girls. The story is fun and has some creative twists and turns. I like all the magical spells, creatures, and tools. I also LOVE that this book is clean! No language or anything else questionable. There are some scary scenes and characters, but they aren't overly scary. There is some minor violence when they're fighting the bad guys. I would recommend this book for third grade and up as a silent read and maybe second/first grade for a read-aloud. You may read my full review on my book blog the-readathon.blogspot.com.
I loved the imagination as well as the whole story line of this refreshing book. Ms. Park definitely has left me hoping that this will be the beginning of a new series for people of all ages to enjoy.

I highly recommend this book for everyone from elementary school to senior citizens like myself to enjoy!
Why is it that so many fantasy, horror detective stories offered at minimal cost are plagued with proofreaders who do not understand the correct use of an apostrophe, cannot differentiate between homophones, and fail even to spell simple words correctly?! Simple, avoidable errors have detracted from my enjoyment of this excellently constructed first- of-a -series novel. Five stars should have been the correct rating!
